Complicated subject that few understand - which doesn't mean everyone (myself included) feels shy in expressing an opinion based on their world-view.
The best expression of the very real debate came from my father - who became MUCH wiser as I grew older...
"Liberal in thought, yet conservative in action" was his mantra. In practice it meant that we were free to discuss damn near anything at the dinner table, conspiracy theories, biblical history vs. "real" history, racial injustice, freedom of speech, universal healthcare, etc, etc. Actual change was not something to be rushed into - not solely due to inertia, but to fully understand the ramifications of that change.
Change almost always has winners and losers - it's up to us as a society to decide what are values should be and how to get there.
