"Fairness" is a hammer that the rich use to beat down the poor. Who the hell cares if someone gets something you didn't? And for all the bleatings from the right - it's even Biblical (Matthew 20: 1–16) - although I suspect that many would argue against that particular parable while simultaneously pulling single verses out of context from Judges to justify abhorrent behavior is just fine.

Fact is that we've become a "pull up the drawbridge behind you" kind of society. We all know the system is rigged, but we're very happy to take advantage of those fingers on the scale should we get lucky.
