Here's the dumb part of all of this

Colleges and Universities learned they could actually be profit centers, and since Uncle Sam was guaranteeing these loans, they could jack up the price of higher education to eye-watering levels.

Good old 'merican greed caused problems with the economy? You don't say...

Here's the dumb part: The universities and colleges still get their money. Just like all those investment banks got bailed out in 2008 and we handed out record bonuses (sure taught them a lesson, didn't we?), we turn right around and hand tax payer money to the institutions that caused the issue in the first place.

Greed always wins when it has Stupidity to shift the blame elsewhere.
