I was 17 days old when Kennedy was assassinated

I don't remember very much about that day

The bigger tragedy for me was Robert Kennedy being gunned down in LA almost 5 years later. I'm not convinced that JFK would have been able (or even wanted) to enact bold societal change. His death at that exact moment gave us (ok, our country) a blank canvas we could hang our hopes and dreams on - and his memory could motivate in ways (think Apollo 11) that he likely could not.

I wept after reading David Halberstam's book on RFK - I feel cheated out of a country that never had a chance to be. I feel his brother's death created a myth that was more powerful than the reality could ever hope to be
