"pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" has been twisted from its original meaning. It's supposed to convey the impossibility of improving one's situation without changing the system in which they exist. Now it gives cover to entitled folks and justifies their lack of empathy and action.

(And if I hear one more person my age complaining about "15$ for work that's supposed to be done by teenagers" I swear I will go off on them)
