Thanks for writing this Stacey — am immersed in this as we speak! Son #1 is now 17 and actually played baseball at a very high level until he turned 14 and then switched to music. He now plays jazz/blues guitar with a group of professional musicians in their 50s and fits right in. He’s 6'3", so no worries about being bullied, but you nailed it with the socialization issues that have popped up.
Son #2 is 11, fluent in Chinese and has played violin since he was 4 (his choice). He is frequently targeted by bullies and middle school is going to SUCK next year. I found your piece very helpful in trying to help him navigate the next few years — I see your article about being able to help him find himself, but also how he fits (and will continue to fit) into the world — thanks!
