My relatives were arguing the same thing in their irrational attempts to have our governor (Newsome) recalled - one of their big talking points? Gas prices are too high and he's not doing anything about the situation.

I actually weighed in on social media, without telling my wife of course and left a very reasoned response that spelled out how complicated a simple thing like "gas prices" actually is, and our state governor has little (at best) to do with that.

The responses were along the lines of "well, he's pretty powerful, so of course he can doing something about it". (As if seasonally higher gas prices during a pandemic should be top of mind while people are dying and the economy is withering)
