This clip explains my personal feelings on charity and giving to the homeless - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsYPlJiqbBc
In the episode, Isaac (played by Robert Guillaume) gives a touching speech - paraphrased - "you're not going to solve anyone's problems and you know what? It probably will be spent on booze - but so what? If I can give someone a few bucks that I won't even miss, but will help them get through one more night with a little less pain - why not?"
I'm as guilty of this as the next person - but strive to be someone who looks for reasons to be kind instead of reasons to be apathetic - have I been taken advantage of? You bet - and probably more often than I know - but so what?
If may be selfish for a moment - perhaps it's about learning to be grateful and generous instead of trying to fix a broken person.
