It's easy to be for/against something in the abstract. I can sit in church all day long and defend anything, b/c it doesn't actually affect me in the slightest. It's only when we're touched that we suddenly find a little wiggle room (I refuse to call it compassion) to justify changing the rules for our daughter, our sister, or our mistress.
