Whether it should matter or not - the "asking" is important. Most of us don't have much power in this world - ever work retail? - but we usually retain the right to say "no".
I confess that when the approach is one of entitlement, my initial reaction is to push back with a similar tone. (One of many things I'm not proud of)
This is a good reminder that we don't know anyone else's story, and extending grace rarely costs anything
