With rights come responsibilities, otherwise one is just being selfish.
I have the right to smoke a cigar — but not in a busy restaurant where my choice affects many others negatively.
(just to open a can of worms for fun) I have the right to bear arms because I have the responsibility (in 18th century. America) to defend my community.
I have the right to free speech, which means I have the responsibility to know what the hell I’m talking about when I open my mouth, and the responsibility to educate myself so I don’t sound like a jackass.
I have the right to run around at night waving a flashlight in the air, but the responsibility to not do this if we’re under blackout rules b/c of night bombing during WWII.
We’re big on our individual rights in the US, but not so much with the community responsibility thing. We want to believe that we made it on our own, but the reality is that we take every advantage offered, call ourselves smart for doing so, and then criticizing anyone who dares call out our hypocrisy.
